UNDERAGE MARRIAGE COUNSELING
Pursuant
to the California Family Code before a minor can get a court order granting
permission to marry the Court shall require the minor, the minor’s selected
marriage partner and the minor’s parent(s) to participate in pre-marital
counseling concerning social, economic and personal issues. The parties must
first go to the office of the Siskiyou County Clerk to obtain the necessary
paperwork to bring to the counseling session. The counseling is done by a
Mediator at Family Court Services. There is a $75.00 fee that must be paid at
the office of Family Court Services prior to the session. Sessions are done by
appointment only. Any potential marriage partner to the minor is required to
bring valid picture identification, such as a driver’s license, verifying that
they are over the age of eighteen. The session takes approximately thirty to
sixty minutes. At the end of the session the Mediator will sign the
appropriate paperwork either recommending for or against the marriage. You
will then need to get the signature of one of the Superior Court Judges on the
form. Ultimately you will return the signed form to the office of the County
Clerk for the issuance of the marriage license.
